Jan. 2021 -- New Kids Non-Fiction at the Takoma Park Maryland Library

Just like their grown-ups, some kids prefer non-fiction. These days, most non-fiction books aren't textbook, for-the-report kinds of books. Instead, they are "narrative non-fiction" -- written in an engaging manner yet still based on facts.

There are a number of awards for kids non-fiction, including the Sibert Medal. The Sibert Medal is given each year by the American Library Association -- the same folks responsible for the Newbery and Caldecott Medals -- to the best non-fiction book for kids ages birth-14. (The same age range as the Newbery and Caldecott). First given in 2001, the Sibert is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and you'll find a plethora of wonderful non-fiction books for kids among its many winners: http://www.ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/sibertmedal  (Note: I served on the 2012 Sivert Medal Committee, and our winner was the delightful "Balloons Over Broadway" written and illustrated by Melissa Sweet.

Meanwhile, here are a number of new kids non-fiction books that we've just purchased for the Takoma Park Maryland Library. (Note: one of them is a book showcasing a myth; in the Dewey Decimal System, mythology is considered non-fiction).You'll see a photo of each book cover, followed by the publisher's write-up about it. Our building is closed, but you can check these out via our "Books-to-Go" curbside service program, and we've recently expanded our pick-up hours to Mon-Fri 2 p.m.-8 p.m. and Saturday noon-6. All the details are here: http://www.takomapark.info/library/curbside.html

"One day, a girl gets on her motorcycle and rides away. She wants to wander the world. To go . . . Elsewhere. This is the true story of the first woman to ride a motorcycle around the world alone. Each place has something to teach her. Each place is beautiful. And despite many flat tires and falls, she learns to always get back up and keep riding.

Award-winning author Amy Novesky and Governor General's Award-winning illustrator Julie Morstad have teamed up for a spectacular celebration of girl power and resilience." (From the publisher, Viking Children's Books)

"Winner of 2021 Orbis Pictus Award!

The story of Elgin Baylor, basketball icon and civil rights advocate, from an all-star team

Hall-of-famer Elgin Baylor was one of basketball's all-time-greatest players;an innovative athlete, team player, and quiet force for change. One of the first professional African-American players, he inspired others on and off the court. But when traveling for away games, many hotels and restaurants turned Elgin away because he was black. One night, Elgin had enough and staged a one-man protest that captured the attention of the press, the public, and the NBA.

Above the Rim is a poetic, exquisitely illustrated telling of the life of an under-recognized athlete and a celebration of standing up for what is right." (From the publisher, Harry N. Abrams Inc.)

"A unique account of the amazing Thai cave rescue told in a heart-racing, you-are-there style that blends suspense, science, and cultural insight.

On June 23, 2018, twelve young players of the Wild Boars soccer team and their coach enter a cave in northern Thailand seeking an afternoon&;s adventure. But when they turn to leave, rising floodwaters block their path out. The boys are trapped! Before long, news of the missing team spreads, launching a seventeen-day rescue operation involving thousands of rescuers from around the globe. As the world sits vigil, people begin to wonder: how long can a group of ordinary kids survive in complete darkness, with no food or clean water? Luckily, the Wild Boars are a very extraordinary "ordinary" group. Combining firsthand interviews of rescue workers with in-depth science and details of the region's culture and religion, author Christina Soontornvat, who was visiting family in Northern Thailand when the Wild Boars went missing, masterfully shows how both the complex engineering operation above ground and the mental struggles of the thirteen young people below proved critical in the life-or-death mission. Meticulously researched and generously illustrated with photographs, this page-turner includes an author's note describing her experience meeting the team, detailed source notes, and a bibliography to fully immerse readers in the most ambitious cave rescue in history." "Discover the wonders of DNA in a fascinating new book from the creators of the award-winning Tiny Creatures and Many.

Earth is full of life! All living things grow&;plants, animals, and human beings. The way they grow, whether it be fast or slow, enormous or not so big, helps them survive. But growing is also about change: when people grow, they become more complicated and able to do more things. And they don&;t have to think about it, because bodies come with instructions, or DNA. With simple, engaging language and expressive, child-friendly illustrations, Nicola Davies and Emily Sutton provide an introduction to genetic code and how it relates to families to make us all both wonderfully unique and wholly connected to every living thing on earth." "Award-winning author and illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh brings an ancient Mesoamerican creation myth to life

Long ago, the gods of Mesoamerica set out to create humans. They tried many times during each sun, or age. When all their attempts failed and the gods grew tired, only one did not give up: Quetzalcóatl -- the Feathered Serpent. To continue, he first had to retrieve the sacred bones of creation guarded by Mictlantecuhtli, lord of the underworld. Gathering his staff, shield, cloak, and shell ornament for good luck, Feathered Serpent embarked on the dangerous quest to create humankind.

Award-winning author and illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh brings to life the story of Feathered Serpent, one of the most important deities in ancient Mesoamerica. With his instantly recognizable, acclaimed art style and grand storytelling, Tonatiuh recounts a thrilling creation tale of epic proportions." (From the publisher, Harry N. Abrams Inc.)

"Who was at the forefront of women's right to vote? We know a few famous names, like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, but what about so many others from diverse backgrounds -- Black, Asian, Latinx, Native American, and more -- who helped lead the fight for suffrage? On the hundredth anniversary of the historic win for women's rights, it's time to celebrate the names and stories of the women whose stories have yet to be told.

Gorgeous portraits accompany biographies of such fierce but forgotten women as Yankton Dakota Sioux writer and advocate Zitkála-Šá, Mary Eliza Church Terrell, who cofounded the National Association of Colored Women (NACW), and Mabel Ping-Hua Lee, who, at just sixteen years old, helped lead the biggest parade in history to promote the cause of suffrage.

FINISH THE FIGHT will fit alongside important collections that tell the full story of America's fiercest women. Perfect for fans of GOOD NIGHT STORIES FOR REBEL GIRLS and BAD GIRLS THROUGHOUT HISTORY." (From the publisher, Versify/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)

"Through an enchanted conversation with a young girl in a horse-drawn coach, Hans Christian Andersen shares his life's struggles, dreams, and triumphs, whose threads can be found woven into his greatest stories. He tells her about the "fairy tale of his life" and how the son of a shoemaker became a celebrated writer.

Heinz Janisch paints a sensitive portrait of Andersen and his literary work. Maja Kastelic has developed a well-suited illustration concept for this story that combines sumptuous art of a picture book with elements of a graphic novel. Thus, for the first time, H. C. Andersen's life and work become a fascinating collage in picture book form." (From the publisher, North South Books)

"This powerful nonfiction picture book explores wildlife crossings around the world and how they are helping save thousands of animals every day.

Around the world, bridges, tunnels, and highways are constantly being built to help people get from one place to another. But what happens when construction spreads over, under, across, and through animal habitats? Thankfully, groups of concerned citizens, scientists, engineers, and construction crews have come together to create wildlife crossings to help keep animals safe.

From elk traversing a wildlife bridge across a Canadian interstate to titi monkeys using rope bridges over a Costa Rican road to salamanders creeping through tiny tunnels beneath a Massachusetts street, young readers are certain to be delighted and inspired by these ingenious solutions that are saving the lives of countless wild animals." "Sy Montgomery has had many teachers in her life: some with two legs, others with four, or even eight! Some have had fur, feathers, or hooves. But they've all had one thing in common: a lesson to share.

The animals Sy has met on her many world travels have taught her how to seek understanding in the most surprising ways, from being patient to finding forgiveness and respecting others. Gorillas, dogs, octopuses, tigers, and more all have shown Sy that there are no limits to the empathy and joy we can find in each other if only we take the time to connect.

Based on the New York Times best-selling adult memoir, Sy Montgomery and Rebecca Green's beautiful, friendly guide is for readers young and old who wish to be better creatures in the world. Go ahead, pass it on. " (From the publisher, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)
